T-Display-S3 AMOLED Battery Connection

Hello, I have a non-touch T-Display-S3 AMOLED which I am wanting to power without using USB.
I've seen mention of the T-display-S3 having a TP4056 onboard for use with a Li-Po cell connected to the JST Bat connector.
Can I connect a Li-ion cell directly to the board and have it charge? or is it only suitable for a Li-Po cell? -
Li-ion is OK! (most common and I believe it was LilyGO's intent.)
Li-Po is denser but more prone to catching fire and/or blowing up. -

I am making a remote control for an electric skateboard and now I am wondering if a physical switch between the battery and board would be a good idea or whether to just rely on putting the ESP32 to sleep, do you have any thoughts on this?
I guess I'm assuming the T-display-S3 has battery protection built in so stop it from dropping the battery voltage too far if it wasn't charged for a while.

@karls0n The charge regulator on board, TP4056, is a very good device.
The LilyGO T-Display S3 boots back up in seconds, so it should be shut down when not in use.
I would not leave a charging Li-ion battery unattended for very long, Li-ion are very touchy about re-charging too fast from empty. The TP4056 takes care of that but there are worst-case or extreme situations...
It is designed for a couple 16550 types.
It is intended that the USB supplies the charging current, so the LilyGO T-Display S3 is "ON" while charging, but you could program the LCD to turn off the backlight whilst charging!
